Frequently Asked Questions

Should I learn in an automatic or manual vehicle?
We advise that you should learn in a vehicle that is the same gear type as your vehicle at home. If you have an automatic at home then it makes sense to learn in an automatic as you will need lots of driving hours, and if you can’t practise at home then this will be an issue.

How many lessons do I need before I am ready for my Provisional Licence?
The average learner takes approximately 12 lessons to get through the logbook and 100 hours of driving experience to be competent to have their Ps. The absolute minimum lessons you can complete the logbook in 5, however to do this you must be at driving test standard as this allows no time for tuition, only assessment. That means you are looking at on average 88 hours of driving practise outside of your professional lessons.

Your instructor will help you manage this practice and give guidance and support to your parent/guardian that to help your practice complement your lessons.

How long do lessons go for?
1 hour is our standard lesson time. Alternative lesson times can be arranged with your instructor if required.

I am with another school, can I change and continue my log book with Fifth Gear Motoring?
Yes, you are free to change instructors. Your new instructor can continue on with your current log book from where you are currently up to. Feel free to ring and discuss this in more detail.

Why Take professional driving Lessons?
Our trainers have the expertise to teach you to be the best driver you can, with current techniques, skills and attitudes for todays roads. Getting practice on the roads with family is still vital to reinforce your professional tuition and gain as much experience as you can.

How can I pay?
We accept
1. Credit card. This must be done prior to the lesson on the office phone.
2. Electronic transfer. This must be done prior to the lesson on the office phone - inquire with the office.
3. Cheque. Made out to Fifth Gear Motoring on the day of your lesson.
4. Cash on the day of your lesson.

Many of our customers like to pre-pay a set amount of lessons to make the payment process simple and a voucher is issued in these circumstances.

Do you do packages?
We don't offer packages of lessons, just good quality driver training. Packages may leave you stuck with 5 or 10 lessons with an instructor you are not happy with so our advice is to always check the refund policy if you choose to head down this path with another school.

Are The MINI Coopers insured?
Yes, our MINI Cooper training vehicles are fully insured and there are no costs to the student if a crash were to occur* unless the student was negligent in their actions at the time.
