Nissan Skyline R32 GTR
A brief history on the R32 GTR - a very important part of Australian Motor Racing history.
The all wheel drive concept, designed by Nismo, was put into production by Nissan as the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R. Initial production of the car was the required 5000 to allow for homologation. It’s Group A campaign began in 1990, due to strict homologation rules, Nissan was required to also sell a series of the Skyline GT-R which more accurately reflected the car they use in Group A racing. This series was called the Skyline GT-R 'Nismo' edition.
The 1990 model R32 was released with a new motor designated RB26DETT. The RB26DETT is a 2.6 Ltr, DOHC, 24 valve, in-line 6, twin T28 Garrett turbochargers and a large front-mount intercooler help the RB26DETT produce a rated 280hp at 6800rpm and 260ft-lb of torque at 4400rpm. In most peoples' opinion, the R32 was underrated by the factory.
The R32 GT-R uses a 5-speed manual gearbox which is connected to Nissans ATTESA-ETS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All - Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system. ATTESSA monitors the car's movements a 100 times per second, including wheel rotation, and lateral as well as longitudinal acceleration. When wheel slip is detected, the system electronically distributes torque from this spinning wheel to one without slip. Torque distribution can be adjusted to settings between 0:100 and 50:50. The rear of the R32 utilizes an active Limited Slip Differential.
